Depends on the backup software you use, what backup strategy you implement, and what you need to backup. Where you will start at this point also depends on what you may have already backed up to the Passport and if you are using the pre-installed Passport software.

Super helpful travel and passport info! Definitely use this app if you travel a lot. It tells you the visa requirements too so you can plan ahead and get the forms and everything you need. Used it for India consulate and it was a breeze. Passport info too if you need it. It also has travel alerts and tips that are relevant and helpful. I purchased Western Digital My Passport 1 TB Portable Hard Drive for Mac, Silver by Western Digital. During the 1st use which can take hrs if you computer’s disc is full (mine took 3-6 hrs), “My Passport for Mac” backs up EVERYTHING on your computer. To check, go to Finder, Click on the icon of a hard drive saying “My Passport for Mac”. I have a WD passport that won’t open! I recently updated my Mac to OS Catalina, and I think that is the reason why. The WD SmartWare Icon appears on my desktop. When I push it, I get into a folder. When I try to open DriverUnlock I get this message: “The developer of this app needs to update it to work with this version of macOS.

If you want every change you make to a document instantly backed up to the Passport, then you need the right software to do that (if it exists.) If you wish to use Time Machine that is part of OS X, then it backs up every hour but does not instantly backup a changed file. You would have to repartition and reformat the Passport in order to use Time Machine. Also, for Time Machine to work properly your Passport must be at least twice the capacity of your computer's drive. If is isn't, then you will have to decide upon a different type of software and backup strategy.
